In general, we want people to understand our perspective and feelings instead of understanding theirs. While you don’t have to agree with other people’s beliefs, don’t assume you know their motivations. Since people make decisions based on multiple factors, don’t assume you know them all. Dismissing people’s feelings will likely make people feel unheard and unseen. It doesn’t take a lot to acknowledge that someone could be genuinely concerned, angry or fearful. An empathetic response to a family member or friend, could make the world of difference to someone.
